Oahu — the home of surfing

We landed late at night on the island of Oahu — also called ‘the main island’ — where we stayed in the city of Honolulu for two days. Waking up at four in the morning by Waikiki beach (thanks to jet lag) was not the worst turn of events. As we walked by the beach side, we noticed the first local surfers attempting to catch some waves before work, while the sun rose behind the Hawaiian mountains. We didn’t need any more convincing, and the next morning (thanks to that stubborn jet lag) we were in the water by 6:30 enjoying our first white waters. By following the instructions and advice of the locals, we eventually managed to get some proper waves. Or at least I did! Sebi, full of happiness from standing on his board for the first time, made the rookie mistake of jumping back into the water, hitting the reef with his left foot and instantly cutting it open. Luckily for us, Hawaii is a land of kind and sympathetic people, who immediately took care of him and removed the leftover pieces of living plant from his sole.

I still feel goosebumps when I think about that moment where you look out of the water to check the whereabouts of the group, and the second you put your head back under, you’re suddenly surprised by a massive shark swimming almost within arm’s reach. I believe the scariest was to see the sharks appearing from the deep blue water with open mouths (they apparently “enjoy” feeling the flow of water between their teeth) and swimming full gas in our direction.

Kauai

We stayed in the residential area of Princeville, which is a beautiful town built around a massive golf course — you can imagine how fancy that was. We had a great time driving up and down the main road along the coast to visit the villages, and especially enjoyed the food we found along the way. You should know that both Sebi and I put a lot of importance and money on food — we love to try local food, and nothing makes more our day than having a tasty meal coming out of a food truck. We tried plenty: fish tacos, shrimp, fish burritos, açai bowls, fish tacos, açai bowls… okay, at some point we did have some favourites.

On our second day we sailed along the west coast of the island, up to the Napali coast where dolphins and turtles joined the trip. Both Sebi and I have seen many beautiful mountains in Europe and around the world, but nothing compares to the stunning shapes we discovered on the Napali coast. WOW! High peaks supported by wavy shapes, plunging into the deep ocean. Can you imagine it? Waterfalls finding their way between the rocks and vanishing into the air off huge cliffs. Big holes carved into the enormous faces of the mountains, ending in white sand beaches… I could continue but I guess you get the picture.

We landed in the open-air airport of Kona, where we picked up a shitty SUV and headed straight to the Kona and Co brewery — the famous beer company that most also know in Europe. Excited by all the new flavours, we ordered many different beers, and we made sure to come back to the restaurant at least twice more during our stay in Kona.

The second day was fairly chilled, where we went to discover three different beaches. You have to imagine a deserted landscape covered by a thick layer of black volcanic rock, with a few oases of palm trees growing by the ocean. Slaloming between the rough nature, the roads we followed always ended on a little paradise of white sand sheltered by high palm trees. After discovering the snorkeling system while swimming with sharks, Sebi, like a little kid, was running into the water with his mask at every occasion, sadly mostly discovering sand covered by sand and maybe one tiny fish at moments. Disappointed, he would join me on the shore and pick up his more exciting book while letting the sun burn our skin.

Our mission was to drive to a few waterfalls, hoping to be able to swim — but the weather punished us all morning long. Also, we were not much impressed by the town of Hilo, perhaps because we were disappointed by the food. So we decided to drive up to Mauna Kea a little earlier, to head up to 4200 m.a.s.l. We reached the top after a discouraging stop at the visitor centre, where people highly recommended to take a four-wheel drive up the sketchy dirt road to the summit. As young, stubborn kids who know-it-all, we did it anyway (and we were admittedly lucky to make it all the way) but it was every bit worth the risk. Up there, you discover a Martian landscape of red rock poked with craters NASA-like telescopes, and… the SUN! We were above the clouds and we were there to stay, if the cold of the mountain hadn’t eventually convinced us to go back home.

Back to Oahu

Now that we are home, we can both say that this was the best trip we’ve ever taken. Food, landscapes, nature, people, great vibes… everything was aligned to present us with the perfect time we had. We are both extremely grateful for this experience and look forward to going back sooner or later, to discover the many things we weren’t lucky enough to see this time around.
