I tried to focus a second, wondering if I had drunk one too many glasses again. I decided to dig some more by checking out the profile linked with the ad. Apparently this brand called The Rayy is designing rings with a modified surface that can reflect the light into words or drawings. Still intrigued, I happily discovered that the company doing these special rings comes from Lausanne, Switzerland. After one beer and an introduction we started talking about Romain’s path and how he came to create fine jewelry. His story was even more fascinating than I thought and this adventure from technology to innovative jewelry design deserves to be shared.

Romain, tell us about your path, where did this whole experience started?

Inspired by movies like the Lord of the Rings, I decided to study computer science with the hope to create imaginary worlds with computer graphics. During my studies at the EPFL in Lausanne, Switzerland, I worked with Prof. Mark Pauly and Dr. Yuliy Schwartzburg on a technology which combined everything I loved. We developed an algorithm that computes complex surfaces that are able to reflect light and focus it to form any kind of image. How did the idea evolved from a technology into creating a luxury brand?

Throughout the years, we often collaborated with artists, designers and luxury brands, but we really wanted to create our own brand to have the creative freedom to explore the full potential of the technology. We met with jewelry designer Noémie Arrigo with whom we instantly felt we shared a common vision. We launched our fine jewelry brand THE RAYY in 2019 with an 18 carats gold ring collection. Each piece is custom made to reflect a personal message when the sun illuminates it. It’s a truly unique approach to jewelry which puts light in the forefront.

What are the challenges you are confronted to with the development of such fine object?

For example, the jewelry box needed to be custom made in order for the light message to appear inside. Creating photos was really difficult for the photographer and the models as we needed the light to come from just the right angle. And more generally, the effect seems so magical that some people who see the photos think it’s impossible and fake.

You mentioned that you value sustainability and support local business.

We therefore decided to only use lab-grown diamonds as they allow traceable and sustainable origin as well as the absence of child labor or violence. We work with a diamond maker who creates lab-grown diamonds using renewable energy. The result is a diamond identical to a mined diamond, graded with the same criterion but of a guaranteed ethical production.

What are the next steps? How do you see your brand evolving?

We just launched our second collection which was a collaboration with the world-renowned tattoo artist Maxime Plescia-Büchi and his studio Sang Bleu. As you often make the message reflect on your skin, we loved the idea of a “light tattoo” and wanted to explore the connections with this art form. THE RAYY being closely linked to the sun we asked Maxime to design the 12 zodiac signs but instead of using black ink, those constellations would appear on your skin as painted in light.
